Each ATA is divided in several sub-sections, so called sub-systems.

For example:

ATA 29 is hydraulic power, containing main and back-up sub-systems.

Let’s say a main hydraulic system of a certain airplane is given the number 10.

Giving the following code: Main system = 29-10
Back-up system Nr 1 = 29-11
Back-up system Nr 2 = 29-12

Within this main system there is a hydraulic pump, the pump has the number 13.

Giving the following code: Main system hydraulic pump = 29-10-13
Back-up system Nr 1 hydraulic pump = 29-11-13

These ATA code numbers are used in all aircraft manuals all over the world.
